Ingenious Dublin Science Walking Tour

Ernest Walton splitting the atom in 1932
This guided tour has been voted one of the best in Dublin by Hot Press! It covers 400 years of Irish and Dublin science history, and features some of the great Irish ideas and inventions that have changed the world, from Robert Boyle (Boyle’s Law) to Ernest Walton (who split the atom, pictured right) and Erwin Schrodinger. This tour can also include a visit to see an historic steam turbine in Trinity College (subject to permission, time and group size).

The tour complements class work in:
• science
• physics
• chemistry
• engineering
• biology
• creativity and ingenuity
• history

This tour is ideal for Transition Year students, 1st year students, and 6th class and for students interested in science, engineering, invention and history. It is also an excellent introduction to Dublin, as it features several historic buildings, including Leinster House and the Georgian architecture of St Stephen’s Green and Merrion Square.

Route: The tours lasts about 90 minutes, but this can be tailored to your class needs. From Trinity College, our route usually takes us up Kildare Street to St Stephen’s Green and back to Merrion Square to end back at Trinity College. (The route can be tailored to your needs, and can for instance, be a linear walk that ends at St. Stephen’s Green, rather than a loop walk.)
